June is Scoliosis Awareness Month. It’s also a perfect time to screen for scoliosis and begin early intervention before small curves become large curves and require surgery. Children who can benefit from a ScoliBrace® can avoid too much time wearing to school if they start while on summer break.
5 Facts about scoliosis that every parent should know:
1. EARLY DIAGNOSIS IS KEY
We recommend screening for girls before the age of 10 and boys before the age of 12 School screenings are not an accurate indicator and your child should be checked by a scoliosis professional. We offer a FREE SCREENING to all children. This will also allow small curves or potential problems to be monitored and measured.
2. CURVES CAN BE CORRECTED WITHOUT SURGERY
The latest in evidence-based care and bracing is available right here in Naples, FL! Traditional braces are not corrective in nature and the goal is to try and slow the progression. With the 3D technology ScoliBrace® is a fully customized brace designed to improve and correct the abnormal curves, postural distortions without atrophy to the muscles. We use this in combination with SEAS: Scientific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis.
There are still health care professionals that tell parents to watch and wait which can inevitably lead to surgery. We believe in finding it and fixing it early.
3. SCOLIOSIS RUNS IN FAMILIES
You are very likely to have a daughter with scoliosis if you or your mother had scoliosis. There is no known cause in most scoliosis cases…so it’s not your fault! It is also more common in girls by about 90%. Juvenile scoliosis is found under the age of 10 and is usually more severe. Adolescent scoliosis can develop in the onset of puberty and continue to worsen.
4. PAIN IS NOT ALWAYS PRESENT
Even if your child does not have any pain it doesn’t mean they don’t have scoliosis. Some kids will have back pain, leg pain, hip pain and even digestive issues. Some kids will only have postural distortions or a visible curve.
5. ADULTS HAVE SCOLIOSIS
Unfortunately, undiagnosed kids left untreated can turn into a very painful and difficult problem as an adult. 40% of adults between the ages of 50 and 80 that suffer from chronic low back pain will have adult scoliosis. Dr.T Foster Bryant is at the forefront of helping to correct and/or stabilize adults with scoliosis and kyphosis, so it’s never too late to find out if you have a problem.
