The goal of orthodontic treatment is a good bite—meaning straight teeth that function well with the teeth in the opposite jaw. Correct alignment makes it easier to bite, chew, and clean your teeth, which improves your overall dental health.
Not Too Young
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that you bring your child to see an orthodontist for an evaluation by the age of 7. Why so early? An orthodontist is uniquely trained to spot subtle problems with emerging teeth and jaw growth, even while some baby teeth are still present. These check-ups are free of charge and can reveal current needs for treatment, inform parents that treatment should be considered when the child is older, or even provide the good news that your child has a great bite already.
Intercepted!
Malocclusions (literally: “bad bites”) usually become noticeable between the ages of 6 and 12 as the child’s permanent teeth erupt. Some of the most common problems we see in our office are: crowding of teeth, too much space between teeth, protruding teeth, extra or missing teeth, and jaw growth problems. Other malocclusions are related to behaviors and happen over time – such as those caused by thumb or finger-sucking. An orthodontic specialist can intercept these growth problems early and give your child a healthy bite, a beautiful smile, and even improved self-esteem.
Surrender Your Sugar
Halloween is coming quickly, so let’s turn our talk to sugar. I love candy as much as anyone, but if you’re wearing braces or Invisalign® there are just some treats that have to wait. Goodies like hard candy, chewy candy and bubblegum will need to be replaced with softer substitutes like chocolates and peanut butter cups. With or without braces or orthodontic “appliances,” it’s important to be especially conscientious about brushing and flossing during this sugary season to protect your teeth from cavities.
Just For Junior?
A healthy bite is as important at age 50 as it is at age 15. Even though adults are no longer growing, they can also enjoy improvements that come from orthodontic treatment. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age. And, if you’re not crazy about the idea of traditional metal braces, recent advances in orthodontic technology can make treatment almost invisible.
Orthodontic treatment is a smart investment in your dental, physical and emotional health.
