Rainbows are not just for finding a pot of gold – they are also essential to good health! One of the simplest ways to improve your child’s diet is by “eating the rainbow”. This encourages choosing fruits and vegetables in many colors, each providing unique nutrients that support overall health.

The color in food comes from natural compounds called phytonutrients. These compounds help to protect the body from illness, reduce inflammation, and support vital systems such as the digestive, cardiovascular, and nervous systems. Additionally, a rainbow-rich diet supports energy levels, concentration, and physical activity – important factors for learning and play.

Eating the rainbow is especially important for growing children because their bodies and brains need a wide range of nutrients to develop properly. Eating a variety of colors also helps children develop healthy eating habits early in life. Colorful meals can encourage picky eaters to try new foods. Early exposure to a wide range of flavors and textures can increase food acceptance and reduce the risk of nutrient deficiencies. A simple way to start is to add one new color to each meal – add berries to breakfast, eat leafy greens at lunch, and include roasted vegetables at dinner. By choosing a diverse range of colorful foods, you help to nourish your child’s body completely, support long-term health, and make meals more visually appealing and enjoyable. Eating the rainbow turns healthy eating into a habit that is both practical and delicious!

Easy color-by-color ideas kids will actually eat

If you’re not sure what counts, use this simple guide. Aim to rotate choices rather than relying on the same produce every time. Frozen fruits and vegetables count, too, and they’re often budget-friendly and easy to keep on hand.

Black henna tattoo safety for kids in SWFL matters more than many families realize. The Florida Department of Health in Lee County (DOH-Lee) is reminding parents to use caution with temporary “black henna” tattoos, which can trigger serious skin reactions—especially in children. Before your child sits down for a quick design at a festival, beach shop, or vacation spot, it helps to know the difference between traditional henna and black henna, what to ask, and when to walk away.

Is “henna” always safe for kids?

Not always. Natural henna has a long history in cultural and ceremonial traditions. It’s made from the dried leaves of the henna plant, creating a reddish-brown dye that’s applied to the skin without needles and typically fades within a few weeks. Many artists apply it with freehand designs or stencils, and it’s generally considered a safe, plant-based option.

The problem is that not every “henna tattoo” offered to tourists or families is natural henna.

What is black henna, and why is it risky?

“Black henna” tattoos often contain a chemical called para-phenylenediamine (PPD). PPD is commonly found in hair dye, but it is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use on the skin. When PPD is added to henna paste to make it darker and faster-staining, it can increase the risk of an allergic reaction.

DOH-Lee warns that reactions can range from mild irritation to severe blistering, permanent scarring, and long-term skin damage. Because kids’ skin can be more sensitive, families should be extra careful before saying yes.

How can I tell natural henna from black henna?

Color and transparency are your first clues, but they’re not enough on their own. Natural henna typically stains the skin a reddish-brown tone. Black henna paste may look dark brown or black, and the finished design may appear very dark right away.

Your best protection is asking questions and checking ingredients. A reputable artist should be able to tell you exactly what’s in the paste and provide an ingredients label.

Ask for a copy of the ingredients label before any paste touches your child’s skin.

If the paste is black or the artist can’t confirm it is PPD-free, the safest option is to avoid it.

Choose natural henna from artists who use traditional, plant-based ingredients and are open about what they use.

What should parents ask before a temporary tattoo?

Kids often want a temporary tattoo because it feels like a fun, low-stakes souvenir. A quick parent check can keep that “fun” from becoming a weeks-long skin problem.

Use this quick question checklist

“Can I see the ingredients label?”

“Is this paste free of PPD?”

“What color will it stain?” (Natural henna stains reddish-brown.)

“How is the paste mixed and stored?” (A trustworthy artist should be comfortable explaining.)

“Do you use fresh, plant-based henna?”

If the artist seems annoyed, can’t answer clearly, or won’t show ingredients, treat that as a red flag and move on.

What do reactions to black henna look like?

DOH-Lee notes that reactions can range from mild irritation to severe blistering. Some children may develop redness, itching, swelling, pain, or a rash that matches the shape of the design. In more serious cases, blistering can occur and may leave permanent scarring or ongoing skin sensitivity.

If your child has a reaction, remove the product as soon as you can and seek medical guidance. If symptoms are severe, worsening, or involve trouble breathing, facial swelling, or widespread hives, get urgent care right away.

Where are kids most likely to be offered black henna?

Families commonly see temporary tattoo booths at fairs, outdoor markets, beach destinations, theme areas, and travel shopping spots. Spring break and summer are especially busy in Southwest Florida, and kids may ask for a design while you’re focused on the rest of the outing.

Consider setting a simple family rule before you go: No temporary tattoos unless a parent sees the ingredients first.

What’s the safest choice for families in Collier and Lee Counties?

The safest approach is to avoid any product that may contain PPD. If your child truly wants a henna design, look for natural henna from reputable artists who use traditional, plant-based ingredients and who can show you what’s in their paste.

Choose natural henna (plant-based, reddish-brown stain).

Skip black paste or any product with unclear ingredients.

Don’t “test” unknown paste on your child’s skin.

Teach older kids to ask you first, even if friends are doing it.

Next steps for SWFL parents

Your skin is your body’s largest organ—so treat it with care. If you’re weighing a temporary tattoo for your child, make the decision based on ingredients, not appearance or convenience.

Choosing an autism-friendly dentist in Collier and Lee Counties can transform a stressful appointment into a calmer, more predictable experience for your child. For autistic and sensory-sensitive kids, bright lights, new faces, unfamiliar textures, and loud tools can quickly lead to sensory overload. An office that understands these differences can help your child feel safer, more in control, and more willing to return for the routine care that protects their smile.

That’s where Certified Autism Center dental practices come in. Through specialized training and intentional changes to the environment, these teams learn how to support neurodiverse children, adapt care to each child’s needs, and communicate in clear, comforting ways. The goal is simple: a dental visit that feels respectful, inclusive, and manageable for every family in Southwest Florida.

Why does sensory-friendly dental care matter for neurodiverse kids?

Dental offices are full of sights, sounds, and sensations that most adults barely notice—but many autistic and sensory-sensitive children feel them intensely. The hum of a handpiece, the brightness of overhead lights, the smell of materials, or the gentle vibration of a small instrument can still feel like “too much.”

Autism and sensory differences are common. Worldwide, about one in 100 children are diagnosed with autism, and diagnoses continue to rise. As more families in Collier and Lee Counties seek care, it’s essential that routine services, including dentistry, are accessible without fear or dread.

Simple, thoughtful adjustments can make a big difference for kids who experience the world differently. Many autism-friendly dental practices work to:

Offer quieter tools when possible to reduce overwhelming sounds.

Dim overhead lights or provide sunglasses to soften bright light.

Move at a slower pace so children can process each step.

Let kids see, touch, and explore instruments before they are used in the mouth.

Create calmer spaces with fewer visual distractions in the room.

When a child feels more comfortable and prepared, the visit usually goes more smoothly for everyone. Families are also more likely to keep up with regular checkups, which is key during childhood, when early habits and early treatment shape long-term oral health. If you’re new to dental care, you can also explore general kids’ dental care tips to understand what to expect over time.

What can you expect from a Certified Autism Center dentist?

A dental practice with the Certified Autism Center (CAC) designation has completed specialized training through the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This evidence-based training is developed with input from autistic self-advocates, parents and caregivers, and clinical experts.

Dental teams learn about sensory processing differences, communication styles, and how neurodiverse children may show stress or discomfort in ways that are easy to miss. They also commit to ongoing education, so they stay current on best practices rather than treating autism training as a one-time checklist item.

Training often covers practical skills such as:

Understanding sensory processing and communication differences in autistic and sensory-sensitive kids.

Reducing overstimulation in the clinic, from lighting and sound to pace and visual clutter.

Using clear, supportive communication strategies before, during, and after procedures.

Recognizing and responding to behavioral cues that signal stress or the need for a break.

Adapting the structure and timing of appointments to the child’s comfort level.

For families, this means a team that is prepared to meet children where they are. Some children benefit from visual guides or social stories that walk them through each step. Others may need a quieter room, fewer people in the operatory, or extra time just to explore the chair and tools before any exam begins.

An autism-friendly dentist in Collier and Lee Counties will work with you to find what helps your child feel acknowledged and supported. This individualized approach can ease anxiety not only for kids, but also for caregivers who have experienced difficult medical or dental visits in the past. And because oral health affects overall well-being and school success, partnering with a skilled pediatric dentist—like those highlighted in our story on how dental care boosts kids’ confidence—can support your child in many areas of life.

How is Southwest Florida expanding autism-friendly dental care?

Here in Southwest Florida, Healthcare Network’s pediatric dental team recently completed CAC training and earned the Certified Autism Center designation. This step shows a commitment to designing care environments where neurodiverse children—and really, all children—can feel safe, respected, and understood during dental visits.

When care is designed around autistic and sensory-sensitive children, everyone benefits. A calmer, more predictable experience helps first-time patients, children with developmental differences, and kids who are simply unsure about the dentist. Families who have faced stressful visits in the past may feel real relief knowing that more practices are pursuing autism-specific training and adapting their environments accordingly.

For organizations, becoming a Certified Autism Center signals a long-term promise to inclusion and accessibility. This can help build trust across Collier and Lee Counties, especially for families of children with special needs who are already navigating many appointments and services. You can also connect with local programs through resources like Neapolitan Family’s Special Needs Resource Guide and other special needs parenting articles.

How can you find autism-friendly dental care for your child?

If you think your child would benefit from an autism-friendly dentist in Collier and Lee Counties, you can start by looking for dental practices that hold the Certified Autism Center designation. IBCCES maintains information about CAC programs and what the certification means for families at ibcces.org.

Locally, you can also explore pediatric dental options through Healthcare Network’s Certified Autism Center team. To learn more or to schedule a pediatric dental appointment, visit HealthcareNetwork.org.

As more dental teams invest in autism-focused education and sensory-friendly environments, the hope is that dental appointments become not just manageable, but truly comfortable and empowering. Every child deserves a dental experience that feels safe, encouraging, and tailored to who they are—and families in Collier and Lee Counties now have more options than ever to make that possible.

Free children’s dental screenings in Collier County are happening on Feb. 28 at Nichols Community Health Center in Naples. Hosted by the Florida Department of Health in Collier County (DOH-Collier), the second annual Collier County Children’s Dental Day offers quick, no-cost checkups to support your child’s oral and overall health. No appointment is needed, and a parent or legal guardian must be present.

What is Collier County Children’s Dental Day?

Collier County Children’s Dental Day is a one-day community event focused on pediatric oral health. Local dental professionals volunteer their time to provide basic screenings for children at no cost to families.

Who: Children accompanied by a parent or legal guardian

What: Basic pediatric dental screenings

When: Feb. 28, 8 a.m.–1 p.m.

Where: Nichols Community Health Center, 12655 Collier Blvd., Naples

Cost: Free, no appointment required

The goal is to catch potential problems early, answer your questions, and connect families with ongoing dental care if needed.

Why are free children’s dental screenings important?

Oral health is closely tied to overall health, especially for growing kids. Cavities, misaligned teeth, and dental trauma can affect how children eat, sleep, and concentrate in school.

Pediatric dentistry focuses on preventing early decay, guiding proper growth, and building healthy habits that can last a lifetime. A quick screening can:

Spot issues early before they become painful or expensive to treat

Identify areas of concern such as visible cavities or injuries

Reinforce daily habits like brushing, flossing, and limiting sugary snacks

Events like this make it easier for families to access care, especially if you haven’t yet found a regular pediatric dentist.

Who is offering the free dental screenings?

DOH-Collier partners with several local organizations to make Collier County Children’s Dental Day possible. These partnerships help ensure children receive quality screenings and information from trained professionals, all in a welcoming, family-friendly setting.

How should families plan for the event?

You don’t need an appointment for the free children’s dental screenings in Collier County, but a little planning will make your visit smoother.

Arrive between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. to allow time for check-in and the screening.

Bring your child’s parent or legal guardian. A responsible adult must be present for each child.

Prepare your questions. Think about any dental concerns you’ve noticed, such as tooth pain, sensitivity, or difficulty chewing.

Plan for follow-up. If the dentist recommends additional care, ask how to schedule a full appointment.

For more details about the event, you can visit the Florida Department of Health in Collier County’s website.

When parents think about keeping their children safe, they often focus on car seats, helmets, and healthy meals. But what about indoor air quality for kids? In Florida, where homes are sealed tightly to keep heat and humidity out, poor indoor air can have a significant impact on children’s health. The Florida Department of Health in Lee County warns that invisible dangers like carbon monoxide, radon, mold, and lead are more common than many realize—and kids are especially vulnerable.

Why Indoor Air Quality Matters for Children

Children breathe more air per pound of body weight than adults, making them more susceptible to indoor pollutants. Poor air quality can trigger asthma, cause long-term lung damage, and increase the risk of cancer or developmental delays.

Common Indoor Air Pollutants in Florida Homes

Radon: A radioactive gas that seeps in from the ground. It’s the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. and is found in 1 in 5 Florida homes above the EPA’s safety limit.

Carbon Monoxide: An odorless, invisible gas from fuel-burning appliances. Poisoning is deadly but preventable with alarms.

Mold: Florida’s humidity allows mold to thrive, worsening asthma and allergies.

Lead: Found in homes built before 1978. Even low levels can harm brain development in young children.

Simple Steps to Keep Your Home’s Air Safe

Install carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home.

Test for radon, even if neighbors’ homes tested safe.

Fix leaks and reduce indoor humidity to prevent mold.

Keep your home smoke-free and limit burning candles or wood indoors.

Use exhaust fans and open windows when weather allows for fresh air circulation.

What Parents Should Know About Lead

Homes built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint—especially dangerous if it’s peeling or chipping.

Children with pica (eating non-food items) may ingest lead from soil or dust.

Be cautious with imported spices, supplements, or candy which may be contaminated with lead.

Follow your healthcare provider’s lead screening recommendations and retest if levels are high.

Make Your Home a Safe Haven

With just a few simple precautions, you can improve indoor air quality for kids and ensure the air your children breathe is as healthy as the love that surrounds them.

The super mom myth often looks like cold coffee on the counter, a never-ending to-do list, and the pressure to keep every ball in the air without ever dropping one. If you feel constantly exhausted, anxious, and guilty that you’re not doing enough, that’s not “just how motherhood is.” It has a name: mom burnout. Once you see how mom burnout is affecting you, you can start to let go of perfection and make space for rest, joy, and support.

You are not alone in feeling this way. Parents of children under 18 report higher stress levels than nonparents. When conversations about parenting focus only on the needs of the family, it can feel isolating and even shameful to admit you’re overwhelmed. You deserve care, too.

What is the super mom myth, really?

The super mom myth tells you that a “good” mom does it all: homemade meals, spotless house, thriving career, calm attitude, and endless patience. In real life, this impossible standard turns into chronic stress and mom burnout.

Burnout in mothers can show up in your body, emotions, relationships, and daily routines. It often builds slowly as you keep saying yes, taking on more, and ignoring your own needs.

Common signs of mom burnout include:

Exhaustion, fatigue, or feeling tired all the time

Annoyance, irritability, or a quick temper

Withdrawing from family or your usual support system

Feelings of guilt, regret, or “I’m not a good mom”

Lack of fulfillment or confidence in parenting

Trouble concentrating or falling and staying asleep

“Analysis paralysis” or difficulty making decisions

Changes in appetite

Some moms are at higher risk for burnout, including single moms, working moms, moms facing financial hardships or discrimination, and moms of children with special needs or chronic medical conditions. Noticing these signs is the first step toward loosening the grip of the super mom myth.

How can I let go of unrealistic “super mom” expectations?

The perfect mother doesn’t exist because you are human, not a superhero. The super mom myth often starts with tiny thoughts: “I should be able to handle this,” or “Everyone else is doing more than I am.” Letting go of those expectations can give you instant breathing room.

You do not have to do everything yourself. Try simple ways to take some weight off your shoulders:

Use phone reminders instead of memorizing everyone’s schedule.

Join a neighborhood school carpool so you’re not always the driver.

Keep a frozen or easy meal on hand for nights when cooking is too much.

Mistakes will happen, and that is okay. Your worth as a mom is not measured by perfectly packed lunches or a spotless kitchen. Focus on what really matters: connection, safety, and love. Each time you choose “good enough” over “perfect,” you chip away at the super mom myth.

How do I practice real self-care (not another to-do)?

Self-care is not selfish; it is necessary. The super mom myth tells you that everyone else comes first and your needs can wait. In reality, taking even a few minutes for yourself can steady your mood and energy so you can show up for your family.

Take a five-minute walk outside and breathe deeply.

Call or text your best friend for a quick check-in.

Listen to your favorite song while you unload the dishwasher.

On the busiest days, make it a point to take at least one short break and do something you genuinely enjoy. These brief moments of rest can shift your whole day.

Self-care also means not overcommitting. The next time your child’s coach asks for volunteers, remember that you are allowed to say no. Protecting your time and inner peace is an important part of caring for your family. For simple, low-pressure outings, explore family-friendly events around Collier and Lee Counties using local community calendars instead of adding more stressful obligations.

How do I find connection without comparison?

When super moms feel stressed, they often pull away from others, which can make burnout feel even heavier. Finding connection can bring comfort, perspective, and much-needed empathy back into your life.

Connection can be simple:

Reach out to one trusted mom friend and be honest about how you’re feeling.

Join a local support group, parent group, or faith community.

Say yes to coffee with another parent after drop-off now and then.

As you build support, avoid the trap of comparing yourself to other moms. You see their highlight reel, not their hardest moments. Remember the motto: connection, not comparison. The right people will make you feel less alone, not less than.

Why does my own health matter so much?

Moms are often excellent at managing their children’s appointments and vaccine schedules but skip their own checkups. Between work, after-school activities, and household tasks, your health can slip to the bottom of the list. Yet your physical health has a huge impact on how you feel and how you show up as a parent.

Regular visits with your primary care provider or OB/GYN help catch potential issues early and support your long-term well-being. These appointments are a chance to talk about sleep, mood, stress, appetite changes, and anything else that feels “off.”

Schedule your annual primary care or OB/GYN visit and keep it on the calendar.

Mention ongoing fatigue, anxiety, or sleep problems to your doctor.

Ask questions about how stress might be affecting your body.

You would not ignore these concerns for your child; your body deserves the same care and attention.

When is it time to get professional support for burnout?

Mom burnout can be a lonely and challenging experience. If you have tried resting more, saying no, and leaning on friends, and you still feel stuck, it may be time to talk with a mental health professional. There is no shame in asking for help. In fact, it is one of the bravest steps you can take.

A licensed mental health counselor can help you:

Rebuild joy and confidence in your daily life and in motherhood.

Understand what is driving your burnout.

Learn new ways to manage stress, guilt, and “super mom” pressure.

Family New Year’s resolutions offer a meaningful way to set intentions and strengthen bonds. But while many SWFL families start the year with high hopes, only 9% of people actually keep their resolutions—most give up within the first month. Why? Vague or unrealistic goals and lack of accountability. The good news: involving the whole family in goal setting makes it more likely those resolutions will last, and become habits.

Some reasons resolutions fail are that they are not specific, measurable, or realistic. It is also best if you have a way to keep yourself accountable.

Setting resolutions as a family helps ensure the new year’s goals are achievable. Involving children in setting those group goals helps ensure they will be willing to do the work.

With each resolution, make sure children understand why achieving the goal will be beneficial. For example, eating fruits and vegetables is good because they make bodies stronger.

To ensure successful family resolutions, parents should also resolve to set a good example. Seeing parents make positive choices will encourage kids to do the same.

To set up resolutions for success, ask children what they want to achieve and then break them down into smaller, short-term goals. For example, if the overall resolution is to eat more fruits and vegetables, the short-term goal might be to eat fruits or vegetables as an afternoon snack.

Resolutions can be as unique as your family. The bonus? Setting goals and resolutions with children help build confidence, responsibility, teamwork, and habits, as well as excitement about possibilities for a new year.

Here are a few suggested goals for families in the new year.

Connect and learn at the table

Plan at least one family dinner together a week without screens. Eating together is more than just meals. Family meals help create stronger bonds and improve emotional and mental well-being, language skills, and diet quality. Short conversations will make the big, sometimes hard conversations easier. It is a time to share triumphs and challenges of the day and practice gratitude.

If you are already living this healthy practice, focus on home-cooked and healthy meals, and involve the kids in planning, shopping, and preparing meals. The more kids are involved, the more you can teach them about healthy eating. Have the kids think of dishes, look up ingredients, check the cupboards, and make shopping lists.

When activities have your family away from home for meals, consider taking some time on the weekends together preparing healthy food for meals on the go.

Plan regular family time

Any time together, like family game night, an evening walk to the park, reading a book together, gardening, or other activities helps strengthen families.

Turning off screens on a regular basis to connect benefits everyone.

Plan a family adventure, which can be as simple as exploring the back yard or visiting the nature center or planetarium. Involve the family in suggesting and planning activities, for vacations.

Volunteer as a family, which helps to instill gratitude in children, which in turn increases emotions like joy and contentment while decreasing anxiety and depression.

Intentionally acknowledge one another

With the rise in social media, face-to-face interactions have declined, hindering the ability to read non-verbal cues, communicate, and function in real-life social situations.

Acknowledgment strengthens personal relationships, enhances emotional bonds, fosters trust, and encourages openness and understanding.

Start by resolving to warmly greet and say goodbye to family members. This means doing more than looking up from games, homework, books, and devices when family members come and go.

Strive to always say “please” and “thank you,” recognize accomplishments, and apologize for mistakes.

Building these habits at home can translate into successful social encounters at school, work, and in the community, while improving the overall atmosphere at home.

The beginning of a new year is a good time to set positive intentions for the family. You can start by asking, “Are there things you want to learn or to change this year?” Then remember that learning means being okay with mistakes, asking for help, and trying again. In time, resolutions can turn into healthy habits.

Telehealth for families in Collier and Lee Counties makes it much easier to fit healthcare into real life. Instead of rushing across town, sitting in a waiting room, or pulling kids out of school, you can connect with trusted doctors and nurses from home, work, or even your car. With a secure video visit, your family can get the same high-quality care you expect in person, with less stress and more flexibility.

Whether you’re managing a child’s allergies, following up on a chronic condition, or just want quick advice, telehealth helps you stay on top of your family’s health without putting the day on pause. All you need is a smartphone, tablet, or computer with internet access—no complicated setup required.

How does telehealth make healthcare easier for busy families?

Between work schedules, homework, sports, and caring for aging parents, getting everyone to the doctor can feel impossible. Telehealth brings care to you, instead of the other way around. You can meet with a primary-care provider or specialist wherever it’s most convenient.

Many families find it easier to book a virtual visit:

During a lunch break or naptime

Right after school, before evening activities start

From home when a child is too tired or uncomfortable to sit in a waiting room

From work or college if an older teen needs to connect with their provider

There’s no commute, no parking, and no need to arrange childcare for siblings. Telehealth also makes it simpler to keep follow-up appointments and stay consistent with care plans, because visits are shorter and easier to fit into your day.

What can parents use telehealth for?

Telehealth is useful for more than “sick visits.” It can help with many everyday health needs, as well as ongoing care for your whole family.

Common telehealth visits for families include:

Minor illnesses, such as coughs, colds, allergies, or rashes

Medication checks and refills

Follow-up visits after an in-person appointment or hospital stay

Reviewing lab work or imaging results with your provider

Support for long-term conditions like asthma, diabetes, or high blood pressure

Questions about nutrition, sleep routines, or healthy habits

Mental health check-ins for kids, teens, and adults

Telehealth can also be a helpful option for grandparents or older relatives. Regular video check-ins can reduce unnecessary trips to the clinic and help families spot concerns early, before they become emergencies.

How does telehealth keep your family connected to their care team?

Telehealth isn’t just one video visit—it’s an easier way to stay in touch with your providers over time. Many telehealth platforms now include secure patient portals where you can see upcoming appointments, visit notes, and test results all in one place.

Depending on your provider’s system, you may be able to:

Send non-urgent messages or questions to your child’s doctor

Review lab or imaging results as soon as they are available

Track progress with weight, blood pressure, or blood sugar between visits

Update your child’s medications or allergies before an appointment

This ongoing communication helps parents make informed decisions and stay engaged in their family’s health goals. It also gives older kids and teens a chance to learn how to manage their own health with support from you and their care team.

Is telehealth safe, private, and covered by insurance?

Many parents wonder if online visits are really secure. Reputable telehealth platforms are designed with privacy and safety in mind. They use encrypted technology and follow HIPAA rules to protect your family’s personal health information, just like an in-person office.

Cost is another common concern. The good news is that most major insurance plans—including Medicare and Medicaid—now cover many types of telehealth visits. Coverage can vary, so it’s still a good idea to check your benefits before your first virtual appointment, but telehealth is becoming an affordable, mainstream option for families in Southwest Florida.

How can you get the most out of a telehealth visit?

Telehealth works best when you prepare the same way you would for an in-person appointment. Before your visit, think through what you want to share so your provider can help you quickly and clearly.

A few simple steps can make your family’s telehealth visit smoother:

Write down your main questions or concerns so you don’t forget them

Have your child’s medications, inhalers, or supplies nearby

Know recent readings if you track blood pressure, blood sugar, or weight at home

Choose a quiet, well-lit spot where your provider can see and hear you clearly

During the visit, don’t hesitate to ask your provider to repeat something, show you how to use a device, or explain next steps again. Your care team wants to make sure you leave each visit knowing exactly what to do.

How do Healthcare Network telehealth services support local families?

Helping children sleep better is one of the most important—and often overlooked—ways parents can support their child’s growth, behavior, and learning. According to Salvatore Anzalone, MD, FAAP, a director of pediatrics and vice president of clinical business development at Healthcare Network, good sleep isn’t a luxury; it’s essential. From managing busy schedules to calming bedtime battles, simple changes in routine can make a big difference in how well kids rest—and thrive.

Sleep isn’t just a nightly routine – it is a cornerstone of growth, learning, and emotional balance for children of all ages. Families today are busier than ever, juggling packed school schedules, sports practices, and weekend activities.

The science is clear: sleep is essential. Children who sleep well think more clearly, feel better, and learn faster. Prioritizing sleep isn’t a luxury; it’s about giving children the foundation they need to thrive.
For younger children, sleep supports critical brain development. During deep sleep cycles, the brain processes new information, consolidates memories, and strengthens neural connections.

As children grow older, sleep continues to influence their physical health. Growth hormones are primarily released during sleep, making rest essential for proper physical development. Lack of sleep has also been linked to weakened immune systems, increased risk of obesity, and behavioral challenges.
Teens face unique sleep struggles due to shifting biological rhythms and academic pressures.

Encouraging consistent sleep routines – even on weekends – can help mitigate these challenges.
In addition to the regular struggles of setting and maintaining consistent sleep routines for children, many parents also have children with sleep issues.

Bedtime battles

One of the most common issues is behavioral insomnia, which often shows up as bedtime resistance or difficulty falling asleep without specific routines. The good news is a few simple changes, like a consistent bedtime routine and a calming wind-down period, can usually make a big difference.

Night terrors and sleepwalking also can occur in younger children. These episodes might be unsettling for parents, but they are usually harmless and tend to fade with age. Keeping a consistent sleep schedule and ensuring a safe environment are key to managing these nighttime disruptions.

These issues can be worked out over time with improved routines and consistency. There are some common sleep issues afflicting children that can be indicative of more serious underlying health problems.

Take sleep apnea, for instance. This condition, often caused by enlarged tonsils or adenoids, leads to disrupted breathing during sleep. Parents might notice loud snoring, restless tossing, or even brief pauses in breathing.

While it can sound alarming, it is treatable and often diagnosed through a sleep study. Treatment may involve surgery or other interventions, and addressing it early can improve a child’s mood, focus, and overall health.

Simple sleep solutions

Helping kids get enough sleep doesn’t have to be a struggle, and it starts with consistency. Establishing a predictable routine sends a signal to your child’s brain that it is time to wind down. A predictable routine can include calming activities like reading a book, taking a warm bath, or listening to soft music. Try to keep the routine short, soothing, and screen-free, ideally starting at the same time each night.
Creating a sleep-friendly environment also makes a big difference. Keep the bedroom cool, quiet, and dark, and limit stimulating activities in the hour before bed.

For younger children, a comfort item like a favorite stuffed animal can ease the transition to sleep. For older kids and teens, help them manage homework and screen time as best as you can so it does not interfere with rest.

Finally, don’t underestimate the power of daytime habits. Plenty of physical activity, limited caffeine, and exposure to natural light during the day all support better sleep.

When to seek help

Sometimes, it is entirely appropriate to seek medical advice. If your child consistently struggles to fall asleep, wakes frequently, or shows signs of extreme fatigue during the day, it’s time to talk to your pediatrician. These issues can affect mood, behavior, and learning and often won’t resolve on their own.
It’s also worth keeping a close eye on your child if he or she exhibits signs of sleep apnea. As stated earlier, it is treatable, and addressing it early can make a world of difference for a child’s quality of sleep – and life.

Prioritizing sleep isn’t just about avoiding cranky mornings. It’s about setting children up for success in every area of life. Sleep doesn’t have to be scary, and small changes can lead to big improvements. When families make sleep a priority, they invest in their children’s health, happiness and future.
