1. 10 Fat Turkeys by Tony Johnston. This sweet, funny book is intended for a toddler audience. Ten turkeys walk along a fence and fall one by one. It's a cute book for counting and has bright illustrations.
2. Turkey Trouble by Wendy Silvano. Turkey is in trouble, fearful that he is going to be the centerpiece for this year's Thanksgiving feast. He dons all sorts of disguises to keep himself safe. Filled with wordplay and sweet illustrations, this book is a hit for preschool through about 3rd grade.
3. Thanks for Thanksgiving by Julie Markes. This book is a reminder to the entire family that it's the little things that make life special and that there is much to be grateful for at Thanksgiving.
4. The Thankful Book by Todd Parr. The Thankful Book celebrates all the little things children can give thanks for. The illustrations are bright and colorful and the text gives parents an entry to other activities that will teach children to be grateful.
5. Junie B., First Grader: Turkeys We Have Loved and Eaten (and Other Thankful Stuff) by Barbara Park. Classmates create a list of things they are thankful for and the results are laugh out loud funny. Best for 6-9 year olds.
6. The Story of Thanksgiving by Nancy J. Skarmeas. A great first book about the history of Thanksgiving for toddlers and preschoolers. The story is simple and clear with lovely illustrations.
7. The Thanksgiving Door by Debby Atwell. This beautifully illustrated book teaches kids about the importance of welcoming people into the family and Thanksgiving celebrations.
8. Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of the Macy's Parade by Melissa Sweet. The story of Tony Sarg, the man who first invented the iconic balloons that we enjoy every year. Read this delightful book the week before Thanksgiving and then enjoy the parade with a new perspective.
9. Thank You, Sarah by Laurie Halse Anderson. The story of Sarah Hale, the female editor who persevered and saved Thanksgiving after 35 years of petitioning and speeches. An excellent book for ages 5-8 about a strong female historical figure that most Americans do not know.
10. If You Sailed on The Mayflower in 1620 by Ann McGovern. Even parents will learn something new in this brightly illustrated book. Kids seem to really enjoy the question/answer format.
