Looking for horseback riding lessons and camps in Southwest Florida? Families in Collier and Lee Counties can find beginner-friendly lessons, themed summer camps, trail rides, and even equine vaulting—often with hands-on horsemanship kids love (grooming, tacking, barn chores, and more). Below are local stables where kids can learn to ride, build confidence, and spend time with these gentle, powerful animals.

Before you book, check age minimums, safety requirements, and summer heat policies.

Where can we do family-friendly trail rides in Naples?

If your child dreams of riding beyond the arena, Naples has options for guided trail experiences.

Rusty Daisy Ranch (Naples)

Rusty Daisy Ranch is the only place where guests can ride trails through the Picayune State Forest. Owner Michelle Bock describes it as “a nice beginner friendly trail ride,” adding, “We cover about two miles of trails. They see all kinds of wildlife.”

One mom, Carrie Christopher, loves trail riding with her daughter Ava, 11: “It is an unbelievable experience… There is nothing like riding a horse in the wild, open and free. It is an unbelievable thing to do as a family.” Ava agrees: “It’s quiet and peaceful and the horses love nature.”

Rusty Daisy’s summer camps are especially immersive: kids ride in the ring and on trails (English, western, and bareback), groom horses, learn horsemanship and barn management, meet the farrier, try obstacle courses, and build new riding skills. “It is very immersive,” Bock said.

West Coast Blessed Ranch (Naples)

West Coast Blessed Ranch offers a two-hour trail ride experience that begins with an introduction and time with the horses, followed by an hour of riding through woods near the farm. “We have really calm horses,” owner Antonio Medina said. The ranch also has a bunny pen where guests can pet and feed rabbits. (Lessons are available; no summer camps.)

Which Naples programs are best for confidence-building and inclusive riding?

For families seeking an inclusive environment—especially when your child benefits from extra support—Naples has a standout option.

Naples Therapeutic Riding Center (Naples)

During most of the year, Naples Therapeutic Riding Center provides lessons for children and adults with special needs. In the summer, camps are open to everyone, giving kids the chance to learn alongside children of all abilities. “It is inclusive,” said Christian Vanorsdale, the center’s director of programs, marketing, and outreach. “It is a great time for them to step into their world.”

Campers ride, do crafts, enjoy guest speakers, cool off on a water day, and show off new skills on a final show day. For more inclusive camp ideas across the region, see Local Summer Camps for Children with Special Needs.

Where can kids find “extras” like pool time, western riding, or parent-and-child programs?

Some equestrian camps add special experiences that can be a big win for younger riders or kids new to horses.

Reddawn’s Ranch of SWFL (Naples)

Summer riding is hot—so Reddawn’s Ranch of SWFL adds a swimming pool break. Campers brush horses, clean hooves, bond with the animals, ride, make crafts, play games, swim, and cool down with snow cones.

Owner Cheyenne Bechtol says her specialty is western riding: “We do barrel racing and [pole bending]. We teach anyone from beginners to those that want to go to shows and compete.”

Cornerstone Farm South (Naples)

Cornerstone Farm South offers a “Mom and Me” program for ages 4–6, designed for kids who want to experience horses with a parent. “There are a lot of parents that want to be hands-on and involved,” owner Leslie Terry said.

Cornerstone also has a volunteer and mentoring pathway. Riders who show strong work ethic can begin volunteering as young as age 10. “We want to build responsibility and encourage those who want to learn more horsemanship,” Terry said. Four high school students per year are chosen for paid internships paired with industry professionals.

Summer camp groups are divided by skill level, with curriculum tailored to interests and ability. “We are not cookie cutter,” Terry stressed.

Whistling Dixie Farms (Naples)

Whistling Dixie Farms offers lessons and summer camp. Owner Julie McFalls says, “A typical day consists of crafts, horse care, horse training, and riding.” (Camp details are typically announced in spring.)

Weather Watch Performance Horses (Naples)

Andy and Christina Wilson, owners of Weather Watch Performance Horses, teach lessons to children ages 10 and up. (No summer camps.)

What’s available in Bonita Springs for lessons, camps, and pony programs?

Bonita Springs has two kid-focused options—one known for a pony-centered Saturday program and one featuring equine vaulting.

Providence Equestrian Center (Bonita Springs)

Providence Equestrian Center offers Pony Pals, a Saturday program where children groom and tack, ride, learn horsemanship, and enjoy crafts and games. Dana Marino, 11, says, “Riding is good because you get to bond with the horses.” Her mother, Amanda, adds, “It’s great for her confidence… it teaches responsibility.”

In summer, children in grades K–8 can attend themed weekly camps (examples include Christmas in July and carnival). Providence has an air-conditioned building for breaks and a covered arena for riding in the shade. Camp may include a water day, bareback riding, and time with farm animals like chickens, goats, pigs, and cows.

Faith Garcia, 10, a long-time camper, says, “There is a lot of stuff to do here… You learn about tack and the horses’ emotions and how to tell how the horses are feeling.” Owner Heather Cassese adds that hard-working students may have opportunities to volunteer and work for riding credits.

Florida Everglades Equestrian Center (Bonita Springs)

Florida Everglades Equestrian Center highlights equine vaulting—gymnastic-style movement on a horse—as a signature offering. “The equine vaulting sets us apart,” owner Joanna Sime said. Vaulting is available during lessons, camps, and birthday parties.

During summer camp, children ages 6–14 may enjoy lessons, horsemanship, crafts, equestrian games, scavenger hunts, swimming, and vaulting, ending with a horse show where they demonstrate new skills.

Where can kids ride in Lee County (Cape Coral and North Fort Myers)?

Lee County families can find robust lesson programs and camps, including certified instruction and scholarship support.

Saddlewood Horse Club (Cape Coral)

Saddlewood Horse Club offers one of the most extensive programs for kids, with certified instructors teaching both English and western riding. Lessons include riding, grooming, and horsemanship and are listed at $60 per hour. Every other month, Saddlewood hosts Horse Interaction Day—an entry-level way to introduce kids to riding at a lower cost. “It is just a fun day at the farm,” owner Christina Sdrenka said.

Saddlewood also offers birthday parties (with an air-conditioned house), a small petting zoo (bunnies, miniature goats, and mini horses), and summer camps with covered-arena riding, crafts, games, and skill lessons—including equestrian vaulting. Sdrenka says vaulting is “a wonderful way to develop coordination, balance, strength, and creativity while working in harmony with the horse.”

Expect lots of horseback games during camp—egg-and-spoon races, obstacle courses, relay races, and more. “We have a humongous amount of games we play on horseback,” Sdrenka said. “Especially for young kids, it is a fun way to learn.”

Gregory Ranch (North Fort Myers)

Gregory Ranch is a small family-owned ranch offering lessons, homeschool classes, camps, and events. Owner Aslin Gregory also runs Hoofed Heroes, a nonprofit that provides summer camp scholarships. “We try to make it so all kids can go,” she said. “I come from a low-income family so this is very important to me.”

Campers ride in the ring and around the property, interact with chickens and goats, play indoor and outdoor games, make crafts, and swim in a pool. Gregory describes the camp structure: “We do stations: grooming, riding, all things horses, morning chores.” She adds an important reminder for new riders: “They are big majestic beautiful animals, but they are also a lot of hard work.”

The ranch also hosts seasonal events such as Rider Reindeer (a holiday fundraiser) and a fall Trot or Treat event, plus a Trailblazing Teens program focused on community service.

What should I ask before signing up for horseback riding lessons or camp?

Use this quick checklist when you call or email. A few minutes now can prevent surprises later—especially during summer.

Age and skill level: What ages do you accept, and do you group riders by ability?

Safety requirements: Do riders need their own helmet and boots, or are helmets provided?

Heat plan: What’s the schedule for shade, water breaks, and indoor cool-down time?

What’s included: Is grooming/tacking part of the session, or just riding time?

Discipline options: Do you offer English, western, trail riding, or specialty programs like vaulting?

Make-up policies: How do you handle weather cancellations and missed days?

The Boys & Girls Club of Collier County has announced it will waive membership fees indefinitely. This means your child can access safe, supportive after-school and summer programs in Naples and Immokalee without a membership fee.

The Boys & Girls Club serves over 4,300 children and teens each year, offering academic support, leadership opportunities, and healthy activities in a welcoming environment.

What does free Boys & Girls Club membership mean for your child?

Waived membership fees mean your child can become a Club member without paying a joining fee. The organization’s goal is that no child misses out on the Club experience because of family finances.

As a parent, you have more flexibility. Instead of worrying about a membership bill, you can focus on how your child will use the time after school and in the summer. The Boys & Girls Club provides a safe place where kids and teens are welcomed, known by name, and encouraged to try new things.

The Boys & Girls Club of Collier County emphasizes:

Safe, supervised spaces during critical after-school and summer hours

Positive relationships with trained staff and mentors

Enriching activities that build confidence and skills

In the words of CEO Paul Donahue, “Our services are vital to building a stronger future for Collier County families. By waiving membership fees, we are ensuring that every child, regardless of their family’s financial situation, has the opportunity to walk through our doors, feel welcomed, and benefit from the programs, mentorship, and support that help them learn, grow, and thrive.”

Where are Boys & Girls Club programs offered, and when do they run?

The Boys & Girls Club of Collier County operates locations in Naples and Immokalee. Families across Collier County can look to these sites for consistent after-school and summer options for children and teens.

Programs are designed for the times when kids need safe, structured activities the most: after the school day ends and during the long summer break. At these times, the Club creates a daily routine where youth can get support with learning, spend time with friends, and develop new interests.

Each site offers a safe, inclusive environment. Children and teens can explore different activities and find what fits them best. The focus is on helping them feel that they belong and that their ideas and dreams matter.

If you are juggling work, school schedules, and transportation, knowing your child has a dependable place to go can be a major relief. The Boys & Girls Club’s long-term commitment to Collier County families means they are planning for stability, not just a short-term program.

Who can benefit from these programs, and what do kids do there?

The Boys & Girls Club of Collier County serves children and teens, helping young people learn, lead, and thrive at every age. With over 4,300 youth participating annually, the programs are designed to support a wide range of interests and needs.

Programs focus on key areas that matter to families:

Academic success and support for school progress

Leadership and character-building opportunities

Health and wellness habits for growing bodies and minds

The arts, allowing kids to express themselves creatively

Sports and physical activities for energy and teamwork

Inside the Club, youth can explore these areas in age-appropriate ways. Younger children might discover new hobbies, while teens may take on leadership roles or prepare for their future goals.

Because membership fees are waived, families who might have stayed away due to cost can now consider the Boys & Girls Club as a realistic option. The decision reflects a long-term investment in the success of local youth and the wider community.

Is Boys & Girls Club membership really free and what about other costs?

The goal is simple: remove financial barriers that might keep a child from accessing after-school and summer programming. The club wants every child in Collier County to have access to safe, supportive, and enriching experiences, regardless of a family’s financial circumstances.

While membership fees are waived, every family’s situation is different. If you have questions about any potential program-related costs or details, it is best to speak directly with Boys & Girls Club staff. They can explain current offerings and help you understand how the Club fits with your family’s needs.

If your family has never used community programs before, calling ahead can also give you a sense of what a typical day at the Boys & Girls Club looks like and how your child will be welcomed on their first visit.

How do you enroll your child and stay connected with Boys & Girls Club opportunities?

To learn more about enrolling your child, program offerings, or ways to support the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, you can:

Visit the Boys & Girls Club website at www.bgccc.com

Call the main number at 239-325-1700

Ask about current after-school and summer options in Naples and Immokalee

The Boys & Girls Club has been serving local families since 1997, giving children and teens safe spaces, positive mentors, and opportunities to reach their full potential. If you are looking for ways to keep your child engaged beyond the school day, this long-standing presence in the community can be reassuring.

If you have a young athlete in Collier or Lee County, you might be wondering what the Winter Olympics can teach kids beyond who wins gold. Watching the Games together is a fun, family-friendly way to spark quick talks about hard work, respect, safety, and how we treat ourselves and others in sports. Instead of one big, serious conversation, you can use short moments during events to help your child notice what they’re seeing and connect it to their own team experiences.

How can the Olympics teach kids about hard work and perseverance?

One of the clearest things the Winter Olympics can teach kids is how much time and dedication it takes to compete at that level. The stories behind each athlete’s performance show that success is usually years in the making, not a single “lucky” day.

Talk about the training we don’t see on TV such as early mornings, practice, and learning new skills.

Ask: “What do you enjoy about your training?” to keep the focus on their love of the game.

Follow up with: “What does your coach do when you’re finding it hard to learn something new?”

Use these moments to help your child recognize the value of persistence and listening to their own body. If they mention being pushed past their limits or feeling pressure to ignore pain, that’s your chance to talk about the difference between working hard and unsafe training.

What can the Olympics teach kids about winning, losing, and growth?

Another powerful lesson the Winter Olympics can teach kids is that the experience is about more than medals. Even the best athletes in the world fall, miss a shot, or finish off the podium.

Point out athletes who smile, regroup, or congratulate others after a tough loss.

Say: “You may not win every game, but you can still have a valuable experience.”

Ask: “What do you like about your sport other than winning?”

When you celebrate effort, learning, and courage instead of just results, you show your child that every game is a chance to grow. This takes some pressure off and helps them enjoy their sport, whether they’re playing at a local rec league or dreaming big.

How can Olympic moments teach kids about respectful language and bodies?

Commentators, social media, and even casual conversations can shift quickly into judging athletes’ bodies or making inappropriate remarks. This is a chance to show your child how respect should look and sound.

Speak up if you hear discriminatory, sexualized, or otherwise offensive comments about athletes.

Ask your child: “Has anyone ever spoken about your body in a way that made you uncomfortable?”

Focus on what bodies can do, not how they look: “All those muscles really help ice skaters jump high!”

Make it clear that all bodies are different and no one shape is better than another. When your child hears you talk this way, it teaches them to be kinder to their own body and more respectful of others on their team.

What do the Olympics show kids about safe coaching and support?

The behavior of coaches and adults around the athletes is another area where the Winter Olympics can teach kids important lessons. You may see supportive coaches who comfort athletes after mistakes, and sometimes you may see anger or pressure.

Notice supportive moments: “That coach is being really kind to the athlete who lost.”

Ask: “How does your coach behave when you lose or make a mistake?”

Point out harmful behavior like throwing things, yelling, or pushing an injured athlete to keep going.

Use these examples to describe what a healthy sports environment should look like. Kids learn that it’s okay to expect respect, and that adults are not supposed to scare or shame them to get better performance.

How can Olympic teamwork teach kids about sportsmanship?

Even in individual events, the Winter Olympics often highlight teammates supporting one another. Those clips are gold when it comes to teaching kids about sportsmanship and kindness.

Celebrate moments when athletes cheer for teammates who missed a goal or fell on the ice.

Ask: “Did you notice how that athlete encouraged their teammate after the mistake?”

Follow up with: “How do you and your teammates support each other?”

These small conversations remind kids that sports are about belonging and support, not just about being the best. They also help your child think about the type of teammate they want to be in their own league in Collier and Lee Counties.

How do I help my child talk about their own sports experiences?

Some of the most important lessons the Winter Olympics can teach kids actually come from what they share with you afterward. Children might not label something as “misconduct” or “abuse.” Instead, they say things like “My coach’s yelling is scary,” or “My teammates leave me out.”

Ask open questions: “What do you like about your coach and your team?”

Then gently ask: “Is there anything you would change?”

Listen more than you talk, and stay calm so they feel safe being honest.

If you hear something that concerns you, you can follow up with the coach or program, explore other teams, or seek guidance from trusted youth sports organizations. Remember, every kid at every level deserves a safe and healthy sport environment.

Where can families learn more about safe sports?

The U.S. Center for SafeSport is the nation’s only independent organization dedicated to ending sexual, physical, and emotional abuse in U.S. Olympic and Paralympic sport. As part of its prevention work, the Center offers free resources and abuse prevention courses for parents and kids, plus a mobile app with quizzes, tools, and a disciplinary database showing individuals under certain sanctions or temporary restrictions.

When you combine what the Winter Olympics can teach kids with reliable safety resources, you give your child a strong foundation in both skills and well-being.

To keep the lessons going after the Games:

Use short “micro-conversations” on the way to practice or while watching local games to revisit these ideas.

Explore new sports and programs through local leagues and our youth sports directory and events calendar for Collier and Lee Counties.

Share what you learn about safe, respectful coaching with other parents, athletes, and volunteers.

With a few simple questions and observations, you can turn Winter Olympics viewing into a powerful classroom for your child—one that teaches effort, respect, safety, and the joy of being part of a team.

Searching for a youth sport near Naples or Fort Myers that finally clicks with your child? If traditional team sports haven’t been the right fit, you’re not alone. Across Southwest Florida, unique emerging youth sports are gaining popularity, offering fun, inclusive, and confidence-boosting alternatives. As we often remind our daughter, “You have to be brave enough to be bad at something new.” Whether your goal is to get your child moving, inspired, or passionate about something fresh, these local programs provide exciting ways to build resilience, fitness, and joy.

Roller Hockey

Did you know Naples is a hub for high-level roller hockey? The Collier County Youth Roller Hockey League was founded in 1995 by Todd and Jessica Bergel for their three sons, and it has since grown into a local legacy of excellence.

“We have participants ranging from ages 5 to 70, with talent levels from beginner to professional,” said Rachel Pynnonen. “Our fall and spring seasons together draw more than 100 kids and 75 adults, including four players on Team USA, three of whom also compete for our local pro team, the Naples Labeda Kaos.” Local youth games take place Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the covered rink in Veterans Park.

Rachel’s husband, Mike, serves as youth director for the league, and their two children (ages 8 and 10) both play. “Naples and South Florida are true hubs for high-level roller hockey,” she said. “Our coaches and mentors are passionate and talented, and their love for the sport is contagious. They’re helping raise the next generation of players.”

Kids can also join travel teams such as Kaos and the Blackjacks, which compete nationally and represent Team Florida at State Wars — the largest roller hockey tournament in North America, featuring more than 370 teams.

Roller hockey is a great alternative to ice hockey, Pynnonen noted. “The rules make it more free-flowing — no checking, icing, or off-sides — and Veterans Park offers a convenient, family-friendly location for local players.”

The rewards can come quickly. “Our boys started rollerblading less than three years ago and have found a passion like no other,” Pynnonen said. “They’ve grown in confidence, learned to compete well, and even traveled the country. It’s a story we see again and again in the Naples Roller Hockey League.”

BMX Biking

At the Naples BMX track in Golden Gate City, kids as young as two can experience the thrill of Bicycle Motocross (BMX) — a fast-paced style of bike racing on a dirt track filled with hills and turns. The track, owned by Collier County and run by volunteers, is sanctioned by USA BMX and offers practices on Monday evenings from 6-8 p.m. and races on Wednesdays at 6 p.m.

Volunteer coordinator George Suarez is passionate about getting riders of all ages involved. “Any kid can come, and we’ll get them started,” he said. “I always tell parents to bring their child’s own bike first since it’s what they’re most comfortable with, but we also have loaner bikes for kids to use for free to get started.” He noted that children as young as 2 years old have ridden at the track, typically on balance bikes.

Suarez emphasizes the inclusive spirit of the sport. “No one rides the bench here,” he said. “In other sports, kids don’t always get playing time as they’re learning. Here, everyone can compete right away at our Wednesday night races. Kids can progress from beginner to intermediate to expert to pro designations as they learn and grow in the sport.”

Success stories abound, including a six-year-old who advanced rapidly to the pro level. “We have a six-year-old who became so passionate about BMX racing and has progressed very quickly to pro level in a short amount of time. I love that age isn’t a factor,” Suarez said. “The parents make the experience for the kids; they bring their kids to the track and put so much time and energy into it.”

Suarez and the volunteer team welcome newcomers every Monday and Wednesday night. For more information, visit www.naplesbmx1916.com or www.facebook.com/naplesbmx.

Pickleball

Over the past decade, pickleball has transformed the racquet sports scene in Collier County. Its appeal is simple: the game is easy to learn, accessible to all ages, and offers an active, social way to stay fit. Players can develop skill and confidence quickly, regardless of athletic background.

While pickleball is often associated with adults, the YMCA of Collier County is helping bring the sport to a younger generation. Instructor Helen Anderson leads youth sessions for ages 8-11 and 13-16 at the Naples YMCA. “The pickleball program is about introducing and exploring a new activity, regardless of age or skill,” Anderson said. “We use games and obstacle courses to teach specific skills. You don’t have to be an athlete.”

Anderson’s goal is to create a supportive, encouraging environment where kids can thrive. “We want them to find joy in it,” she explained. “Our goal at the YMCA is to make it fun. Kids get a workout without realizing it. Pickleball becomes an outlet where they can let go, have fun, and just be kids.”
Youth pickleball programs are offered year-round through the YMCA of Collier County and Collier County Parks & Recreation, with opportunities for both fundamental instruction and competition.

Figure Skating

In Southwest Florida’s warm climate, figure skating isn’t always top of mind for young athletes, but opportunities for competitive youth skating are growing. Krista Cianfrani, a strong advocate for the sport, has seen its benefits firsthand through her daughter’s years of competitive adaptive skating. “Figure skating has significantly grown locally,” she said. “Children and teens approach the sport through learn-to-skate programs and private lessons. Oftentimes, the moment their blades touch the ice, they instantly want more.”

Cianfrani highlighted the sport’s many benefits. “The physical exercise involved in figure skating is outstanding. It requires training, dedication, and mental agility. Figure skating involves setting goals and achieving them, and the rewards that come with that process are so empowering.”

There are many ways for beginners to get started. Both Hertz Arena and the Fort Myers Skatium offer information on their websites, and Cianfrani recommends starting with public skate sessions at Hertz Arena. “That first step of getting on the ice, having fun, and being inspired is so important,” she said. “Know that it’s okay to fall; it’s about getting back up, trying your best, and being yourself.”

“Beginners can take group or private lessons,” Cianfrani added. “There are so many options for competition – free skate, solo ice dance, showcase, levels for children with unique abilities, and many other routes to take. I love that the sport is inclusive.”

Collier and Lee Counties are full of exciting and unexpected youth sports opportunities. Why not see what new adventure your child might fall in love with next?

Southwest Florida offers a rich array of musical opportunities for students. However, it can be difficult for parents with a limited background in music to guide their children in this arena, particularly if they want to pursue a specific instrument. Similar to sports though, encouragement appears to be the number one area that parents should focus on, according to local music instructors. But kids are still, well, kids, and parents need guidance on how to navigate the music world.

Lay a strong foundation

Elementary school is the perfect opportunity for students to explore their interests. With related arts classes already integrated into the school schedule, kids are able to take a look at areas that they might want to pursue in middle school and beyond. Chad Craig, the music teacher at Sea Gate Elementary School in Naples, explains how classes are great exposure to the fundamentals of music and demonstrate to students what it takes to become proficient in an instrument.

Craig shares that piano, violin, or ukelele are a good foundation for a student looking to begin playing prior to band, orchestra, or chorus classes in middle school. “The ukulele has taken over the musical world in the last decade,” he said. “A child can learn two or three chords and start playing hundreds of songs.” Starting out with an instrument like ukulele is the financially feasible option for most families, as it allows kids to try out whether playing an instrument is something that excites them by building off the fundamentals they are already learning in music class.

Establish a routine

When a student does start learning a specific instrument, setting up a practice routine is important. Wendy Willis taught flute in Naples for 20 years and was an elementary music, band, and chorus instructor for pre-K through eighth grade at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School in Naples for seven years. When it comes to how parents can support their children’s music education, she finds that encouragement to practice is the most important thing they can provide.

When asked about whether parents should push their children to practice, Willis explains that much of it rests on the child’s own musical aspirations. “If you want to give it a fair shot, parents should say ‘This is your job right now,’” Willis said. By helping to establish a regular practice schedule, parents can ensure that their children are giving this new activity a fair chance. Students who practice consistently will see their skills improve, which enhances their enjoyment of playing and lays the foundation for success in music. The practice sessions don’t need to be long, especially for a new musician. Consistently practicing every day for 15 minutes is more effective than slogging through an hour once a week.

Show up

No matter what age a student is, performing is important because it demonstrates to themselves and those around them the positive results that practice can have. Showing up for your child at these performances helps pave the way to a positive musical experience.

Craig and Willis both emphasized the importance of parents attending performances. “Students want to show off their hard work and talent,” Craig said.

“It is important because it shows that you’re supporting what your child is doing,” Willis added. Attending concerts and recitals over a span of years allows parents to watch their child’s growth as a musician, student, and person. It is a rewarding experience for the student and the parent, because both have put in hours of practice into being the best that they can be.

It’s not one or the other

A common obstacle faced by protagonists in coming-of-age movies is when parents value sports over music. Unfortunately, this is an instance where art is imitating life. But it doesn’t have to be one or the other – many students participate both in music and sports in middle and high school.

Craig grew up playing football and participating in the marching band. It was a

valuable experience for him because so many of the positive lifelong skills that he developed in those activities were reinforced from both activities. “Kids can be athletic and musical,” Craig said.

Personal experience

As a 19 year old who has been studying the flute for nine years and counting, I have found that what I need most from my parents is encouragement. Attending concerts, sitting through mock auditions, and occasional (sometimes frequent) reminders to practice ensured my dedication to music.

In sixth grade, my mom surprised me with a book of flute music from The Greatest Showman film. She realized how important the flute was to me, and she wanted to acknowledge my hard work. Knowing that she recognized the effort I was putting in and rewarded me with something that reinforced my love for playing encouraged me to practice and play new music. As a sophomore in college, I continue to hold that memory close to my heart still and play music from that book.

What mattered most to me was the time my mom took out of her day to sit and listen to me practice. It’s really hard to find motivation to practice if you can’t see an end goal, but having someone to share my music with became that motivation.

Alternatives to Private Lessons

Are private lessons too time consuming or expensive? Check out some of these great resources and tips below.

YouTube: Lots of musicians provide free video lessons online, but consider asking a band, orchestra, or choir director for channel recommendations to aid your child’s study of their instrument.

Essential Elements Method Books (Essential Elements Interactive, Book 1 with online media access).

IMSLP.org: Free access to thousands of scores and pieces of music online. Get more info at IMSLP.org

Audition opportunities through school: Solo & Ensemble; All-State Band; All-County Band.

The Music Foundation of Greater Naples: Haegg and Samson Scholarship Competitions provide free private lessons to students. More information at www.musicfoundationnaples.org

Encourage your kid to find a practice buddy: play duets, have scale competitions, and just make sure they’re playing their instrument!

When you think of art classes, traditional options like painting or pottery might come to mind. But creativity comes in many forms—some so unexpected, they might even inspire the most hesitant kids to dive in. If you’re looking for unusual art classes and experiences for kids in SWFL, we’ve got you covered with a vibrant mix of hands-on, out-of-the-box options. From glassblowing and comic book creation to digital design and neon splatter rooms, these experiences spark imagination and make art exciting for every child.

Art is Fluid

There is no right or wrong way to move paint around at Hawaii Fluid Art in Naples. There is no trying to get the eyes or body or landscape correct as you draw. Instead, a cup of paint layered in colors is poured on a canvas and moved around to create a kaleidoscope of swirls and designs.

Abigail Erickson, 11, gets help from instructor Vicky Lewis during a session at Hawaii Fluid Art in Naples.

“The founder wanted the public to come whether they were creative or not,” said store manager and art teacher Vicky Lewis. ”I actually prefer working with beginners — and they are just waiting for the surprise to happen.”

Children pick the colors and then layer them in the cup. The paint is poured in the middle of the canvas, and then the canvas is lifted and tilted to create unique patterns with the colors.

“All the paints are mixed with a fluid compound, and that creates this flow,” Lewis explained. “There are some guidelines, but there are no rules. Art cannot have rules.”

Abigail Erickson, 11, has visited Hawaii Fluid Art several times with her mother, Jennifer Erickson.

“I have never been in a place like this, and it is really fun,” Abigail said. “I love it.”

Sara Denmark recently brought her daughter to the studio.

“It just looked really cool,” Denmark said. “It is something indoors, and it keeps her busy during summer.

She loves painting. It is so hands-on.”

Blown Away

Think kids can’t handle glass blowing? Think again. Glenn Novotny, owner of Adventures in Glass Blowing in Bonita Springs, says it is a great activity for children ages eight and up.

Chuckie Rebertus, 7, learns how to make a heart pendant during a glass-blowing workshop with Glenn Novotny. Photo by Andrea Stetson.

“For the younger ones, we try to keep it simpler. They make marbles or pendants,” he explained.
Children are given some clear glass on a stick. Then color is added, and with Novotny’s help, the glass is put in the fire and then shaped.

“Fire is fascinating for everybody,” Novotny said. “They watch as the glass melts and transforms into different shapes. Glass has no memory, so you can take a broken piece, melt it, and turn it into something else. You can turn an elephant into a crocodile. We are kind of a hidden gem.”

Many of his customers are kids visiting their grandparents in Southwest Florida. Others are locals like Chuckie Rebertus, 7, who made a glass red heart pendant.

“It was really fun. It is so satisfying to watch the glass melt,” Chuckie said.

The Art of Gaming

Some children can’t fathom trading video games for an art class. So Arts Bonita came up with a solution – digital art and filmmaking classes.

Children can take workshops in game design and filmmaking at Arts Bonita.

“One of the most important things in designing is to get kids out of the consumption role and into the creative realm,” said John Ardigo, senior education director at Arts Bonita. “Our hope is that kids get exposed to that and they keep building on it into more specific disciplines like animation.”

The strategy worked with his own child.

“I told my 10-year-old that she should come to the camp at the art center, and she said, ‘I am not into art.’ I told her there was digital art, and now she comes every week,” he said.

There is another benefit to this type of art, according to Ardigo.

“The great thing about digital arts is there is a lot of collaboration,” he explained. “There is a lot of community that is being built and that is key to me.”

Roberto Delgado, 9, is taking digital art classes.

“It’s fun. You can make your own game,” he said as he created a car racing game.

Aloyna Ushe, Arts Bonita executive director, is excited to see children enjoying this type of art.
“It kills me to see kids on their phones. This is a way to take technology and have them use their imaginations to do something creative,” she said.

Comic Creation

For kids who enjoy visual storytelling, stepping into the world of comics offers a unique and imaginative path.

Rich Faber teaches students how to create a realm for their comic book characters.

Rich Faber, an award-winning illustrator whose comic illustrations have appeared on the Cartoon Network and in many prestigious publications, teaches a class for teenagers at the Naples Art Institute. The course, “Design Your Own Worlds and Establish the Lore Behind Them,” takes comic creation to a whole new level.

“I found that kids really like to not just come up with characters, but the visualization of what their realms are,” Faber said. “A lot of them are into manga and anime. Most of them already have ideas of characters and content. So, this is flushing out what they want to do with those characters in those realms. I am helping them open the tap.”

Faber also welcomes those who are new to comics.

“We are very open to new kids coming in,” Faber stressed. “I like to foster an atmosphere of camaraderie.”

An Artful Mess

Two businesses in SWFL let children create art while expending some of their boundless energy.

Stacy Sawyer, owner of Pineapple Picasso in Cape Coral, was a teacher for 30 years and says she knows exactly what children want to do. They are given a poncho, shoe coverings, and goggles, and then set free to squirt each other with neon paint.

“Make a mess, make a memory,” Sawyer said. “We are giving you the freedom to splatter the walls, floors, and each other. Kids love to get messy, and it is a way to get messy without getting in trouble.”
Children are also given a canvas to squirt so they have a keepsake to take home. Many participants wear a white t-shirt over the poncho to also create a fashion statement.

At Just One of Those Dayz in Fort Myers, patrons are given neon paint to throw at a canvas, the walls, and each other in the laser and black-lighted room, according to owner Angela Ziegler.

“About 95 percent of them paint each other, which is the funny part,” she said. “It is even more funny if they can get their parents or grandparents in there.”

Participants also get a canvas to create a piece of art to take home.

“Everyone loves it,” Ziegler said.
