FAQ

When should families register for Vacation Bible School in Southwest Florida?

Families should register as early as possible because many Vacation Bible Schools and faith-based summer camps in Collier and Lee counties have limited space. Some programs also offer early registration before volunteer teams and classroom groups fill up.

What ages can attend Vacation Bible School in Collier and Lee counties?

Most Vacation Bible Schools in Southwest Florida are designed for preschool and elementary-age children. Many 2026 programs are open to children ages 4 through 5th or 6th grade, although age cutoffs vary by church and camp.

Are Vacation Bible Schools usually free?

Many Vacation Bible Schools are free or low cost. In this roundup, some programs are free, while others charge a small fee to help cover supplies, T-shirts, snacks or special activities.

What is the difference between Vacation Bible School and a faith-based summer camp?

Vacation Bible School is usually a short church program that runs for one week and includes Bible lessons, music, crafts, games and snacks. A faith-based summer camp may follow a similar format but can also include electives, sports, arts, service projects or longer day-camp hours.

Do churches in Naples, Fort Myers and Cape Coral offer half-day or full-day camps?

Most traditional Vacation Bible Schools are half-day programs, often held in the morning or evening. Some faith-based summer camps, including specialty camps, may offer longer or full-day schedules.

What should families bring to Vacation Bible School?

Each church sets its own guidelines, but families may want to ask whether children need a water bottle, closed-toe shoes, a change of clothes, allergy information or pre-registration paperwork. Some camps also offer optional T-shirts or themed dress-up days.

Are snacks included at VBS programs?

Many Vacation Bible Schools include snacks as part of the daily schedule, but offerings vary by church. Families of children with food allergies should check with each program before registering.

Do Vacation Bible Schools in Southwest Florida accept children from outside the church?

Many local churches welcome community families, even if they are not regular members. Registration pages usually note whether the event is open to the public or primarily intended for church families.

Are there evening Vacation Bible School options in Lee County?

Yes. Some churches offer evening VBS programs for families who need more flexibility during the day. In this roundup, McGregor Baptist Church has an evening schedule.

How long does Vacation Bible School usually last?

Most Vacation Bible Schools run for one week, usually Monday through Friday, although some churches may offer shorter three-day or four-day formats. Faith-based camps may follow a similar one-week schedule or run longer hours each day.

Which Southwest Florida cities have Vacation Bible School programs in 2026?

Families can find 2026 Vacation Bible School and faith-based camp options in Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers and Cape Coral.

How can families find more summer camps in Collier and Lee counties?

Families can also explore local summer camp roundups, church event calendars and community guides for Naples, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs and Estero. It can also help to check church websites again later in spring, since additional VBS programs may still be posted.

Educational summer camps in Collier and Lee Counties give kids a chance to keep learning without feeling like they are in school. Across Southwest Florida, children can build robots, mix slime, study marine life, hike nature trails, and test ideas through hands-on projects that turn curiosity into confidence. For parents looking for a smart mix of fun and enrichment, these local camps make summer learning feel like an adventure.

From Naples to Fort Myers, Cape Coral to Sanibel, camp programs are blending STEM, nature study, art, teamwork, and real-world exploration. The result is a summer experience where kids stay engaged, active, and excited to discover what they can do.

What makes an educational summer camp worth it?

The best educational camps do more than fill the day. They keep kids asking questions, solving problems, and trying new skills in a setting that feels playful and low-pressure. Look for camps that make learning active, hands-on, and age-appropriate.

Projects kids can build, test, or explore themselves

Themes that match your child’s interests, from coding to wildlife

A balance of indoor learning and outdoor movement

Staff who connect lessons to real experiences

Options for different ages, schedules, and attention spans

That hands-on approach is what makes many Southwest Florida camps so effective. Campers are not just hearing about science or nature. They are seeing it, touching it, and putting it into practice.

Which STEM camps help kids learn through play?

For families seeking science-focused programs, Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead remains one of the most popular educational camp options in Southwest Florida. Weekly themes include Rocket Science, Lego Engineers, Robotics, Chemistry, and more, with locations in Naples, Fort Myers, and Cape Coral. Choose a theme that lines up with what already excites your child.

The camp was created by local teachers who wanted children to learn in a more creative, hands-on environment. One activity, for example, has campers making a solar oven while learning about light, heat, environmental science, and molecular science. Campers also connect science concepts to technology by using coding and Minecraft-based design projects.

As owner Hilary Shore explained, “We use all these things to teach the different concepts and then reinforce it through coding.”

Super Science and Amazing Art camps also make learning feel like fun. Owner Glen Beitmen, known to many families as “Mr. Glen,” partners with the cities of Naples and Cape Coral to offer camps in a range of local locations. He emphasizes that the lessons are rooted in educational standards, but the experience stays playful and engaging.

Kitchen Chemistry is one of the biggest hits. Kids love the slime, the mess, and the edible experiments, but they are also learning about chemical reactions, color changes, and mixtures. Build It Engineering brings abstract ideas to life through balloon experiments, hydraulics, and even hovercraft rides powered by a leaf blower.

Spy Camp adds another layer by sharpening observation and problem-solving skills. “Each day there is a mystery they have to solve,” Beitmen said. “They solve puzzles by putting all the information together.” That blend of logic, teamwork, and creativity helps kids practice the scientific method in a way that feels exciting.

Are there nature camps in Collier and Lee Counties?

Yes, and they are some of the strongest educational summer camps in Collier and Lee Counties. Nature-based programs give children the chance to learn outdoors in places they already love, including beaches, back bays, trails, wetlands, and preserves. Nature camps are a great fit for kids who learn best by moving, observing, and exploring.

At Lover’s Key State Park, children explore the beach, canals, back bays, and coastal trails while learning about marine life, mangroves, and conservation. Campers use seine nets to bring up underwater creatures, then look more closely with microscopes and interactive science projects. The indoor Discovery Center gives kids a place to cool off while continuing the lesson.

Park manager Katie Moses summed up the appeal this way: “They are learning, but they are having fun, so they don’t think they are learning.” She added, “It’s the kind of summer experience that inspires a lifelong love of nature.”

Camps are divided by age, serving children ages 6 to 16. The older groups tend to lean further into science, and many campers begin imagining future paths in fields like marine biology.

Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary also offers themed weeks that help kids connect with the natural world. In Feathered Friends, campers learn about birds, migration, and bird sounds. In Masters of Disguise, they discover how animals use camouflage to survive. Fungus Among Us introduces children to the strange and fascinating world of fungi.

Audubon adds variety with art, music, and sports, plus a special backcountry road trip into parts of the sanctuary families do not usually see from the boardwalk. Teen camp options focus on first aid, leadership, nature identification, and working with younger children, while also giving teens a chance to earn volunteer hours.

What are the best marine science camps in Southwest Florida?

If your child is fascinated by the ocean, several local camps offer deep, memorable marine science experiences. These programs are especially strong in Southwest Florida because they teach directly in the environments children are studying. Marine science camps work best for kids who want to learn by doing, not just by listening.

Rookery Bay offers Friday camp sessions with different themes, allowing families to choose topics that fit their child’s interests. Sleuthing in the Lagoon takes campers to Tigertail Beach to study the ecosystem and observe creatures below the water’s surface. Invertebrate Investigation introduces animals such as sea stars and sea urchins. Biology on a Bike explores uplands and teaches kids how to identify plants and animals while collecting field data.

Older students can take part in the Student Institute for Marine Science, where they spend time in Rookery Bay labs and may even take part in activities such as shark dissection. Scholarships are also available, which can help more families access specialized science experiences.

“Camp is à la carte, so campers can pick their favorite topic,” said TJ Snopkowski, executive director of Friends of Rookery Bay. “It’s like a day in the life of a scientist — whether that’s a panther biologist, shark researcher, or environmental scientist.” He said the goal is to spark excitement about the world and show students the many paths available to them.

Sanibel Sea School also gives children an immersive marine science experience in and around the water. Weekly themes change each year, so returning campers find something new each year. Campers use seine nets to catch and observe aquatic critters before releasing them. They snorkel, explore beaches and wetlands, and collect phytoplankton and zooplankton to study under microscopes.

As youth education director Shannon Rivard explained, “All of our programs focus on marine science. Everything is hands-on and field-based.” She added, “We have lots of things that campers can hold, see, touch, feel, and learn about.”

Can camps build life skills too?

Absolutely. Many educational camps in Collier and Lee Counties are teaching more than science facts. They also help children strengthen communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and leadership. If your child needs confidence as much as enrichment, these programs can do both.

Veritas Study Lounge is one example. Its program blends science, entrepreneurship, and faith-based learning with project-based activities. Mornings may include STEM lessons, podcast creation, or developing and pitching business ideas. Afternoons shift into enrichment activities such as photography, automotive projects, and gardening. Campers also complete a community service activity.

Founder and director Deborah Paul said, “We want the camp to be more than just babysitting. We want the kids to be immersed in a project-based environment where they can think critically, improve their social skills, and grow in their faith.” She also emphasized leadership, executive functioning, character development, and collaboration.

Critical thinking through open-ended projects

Teamwork through group-based challenges

Communication through presentations and podcasts

Leadership through service and responsibility

Confidence through trying new skills in a safe setting

These benefits can matter just as much as academic growth. A child who leaves camp more willing to ask questions, speak up, or try again has gained something that lasts long after summer.

How should parents choose the right camp?

Start with your child, not the brochure. Think about what holds your child’s attention, how they learn best, and whether they thrive in structured settings, outdoor environments, or creative group projects. Pick the camp that fits your child’s personality and curiosity.

Ask whether your child prefers STEM, animals, art, water, or outdoor adventure

Check age ranges and whether older kids get more advanced content

Look at half-day versus full-day options

Consider location if you need a camp in Naples, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, or nearby

Find out whether the camp includes showcases, field work, or take-home projects

Ask about scholarships or volunteer-hour opportunities for older students

Many families also build a summer by mixing formats. A child might do one week of STEM, one week outdoors, and one week focused on marine life. That variety keeps summer fresh while helping kids discover new interests.

Where can families find more summer camp options in Southwest Florida?

For more local resources, explore Neapolitan Family’s 2026 Camp Guide, browse the camp archives, and check the family events calendar for seasonal programs. Parents of older kids can also read Summer Camps for Teens and Tweens in SWFL.

From mixing slime and building hovercrafts to snorkeling in back bays and exploring hidden swamp trails, Southwest Florida camps show that summer learning can be joyful, active, and memorable. Whether your child dreams of becoming a scientist or simply wants to dig into the natural world, educational summer camps in Collier and Lee Counties can spark the kind of wonder that keeps growing long after summer ends.

Looking for horseback riding lessons and camps in Southwest Florida? Families in Collier and Lee Counties can find beginner-friendly lessons, themed summer camps, trail rides, and even equine vaulting—often with hands-on horsemanship kids love (grooming, tacking, barn chores, and more). Below are local stables where kids can learn to ride, build confidence, and spend time with these gentle, powerful animals.

Before you book, check age minimums, safety requirements, and summer heat policies.

Where can we do family-friendly trail rides in Naples?

If your child dreams of riding beyond the arena, Naples has options for guided trail experiences.

Rusty Daisy Ranch (Naples)

Rusty Daisy Ranch is the only place where guests can ride trails through the Picayune State Forest. Owner Michelle Bock describes it as “a nice beginner friendly trail ride,” adding, “We cover about two miles of trails. They see all kinds of wildlife.”

One mom, Carrie Christopher, loves trail riding with her daughter Ava, 11: “It is an unbelievable experience… There is nothing like riding a horse in the wild, open and free. It is an unbelievable thing to do as a family.” Ava agrees: “It’s quiet and peaceful and the horses love nature.”

Rusty Daisy’s summer camps are especially immersive: kids ride in the ring and on trails (English, western, and bareback), groom horses, learn horsemanship and barn management, meet the farrier, try obstacle courses, and build new riding skills. “It is very immersive,” Bock said.

West Coast Blessed Ranch (Naples)

West Coast Blessed Ranch offers a two-hour trail ride experience that begins with an introduction and time with the horses, followed by an hour of riding through woods near the farm. “We have really calm horses,” owner Antonio Medina said. The ranch also has a bunny pen where guests can pet and feed rabbits. (Lessons are available; no summer camps.)

Which Naples programs are best for confidence-building and inclusive riding?

For families seeking an inclusive environment—especially when your child benefits from extra support—Naples has a standout option.

Naples Therapeutic Riding Center (Naples)

During most of the year, Naples Therapeutic Riding Center provides lessons for children and adults with special needs. In the summer, camps are open to everyone, giving kids the chance to learn alongside children of all abilities. “It is inclusive,” said Christian Vanorsdale, the center’s director of programs, marketing, and outreach. “It is a great time for them to step into their world.”

Campers ride, do crafts, enjoy guest speakers, cool off on a water day, and show off new skills on a final show day. For more inclusive camp ideas across the region, see Local Summer Camps for Children with Special Needs.

Where can kids find “extras” like pool time, western riding, or parent-and-child programs?

Some equestrian camps add special experiences that can be a big win for younger riders or kids new to horses.

Reddawn’s Ranch of SWFL (Naples)

Summer riding is hot—so Reddawn’s Ranch of SWFL adds a swimming pool break. Campers brush horses, clean hooves, bond with the animals, ride, make crafts, play games, swim, and cool down with snow cones.

Owner Cheyenne Bechtol says her specialty is western riding: “We do barrel racing and [pole bending]. We teach anyone from beginners to those that want to go to shows and compete.”

Cornerstone Farm South (Naples)

Cornerstone Farm South offers a “Mom and Me” program for ages 4–6, designed for kids who want to experience horses with a parent. “There are a lot of parents that want to be hands-on and involved,” owner Leslie Terry said.

Cornerstone also has a volunteer and mentoring pathway. Riders who show strong work ethic can begin volunteering as young as age 10. “We want to build responsibility and encourage those who want to learn more horsemanship,” Terry said. Four high school students per year are chosen for paid internships paired with industry professionals.

Summer camp groups are divided by skill level, with curriculum tailored to interests and ability. “We are not cookie cutter,” Terry stressed.

Whistling Dixie Farms (Naples)

Whistling Dixie Farms offers lessons and summer camp. Owner Julie McFalls says, “A typical day consists of crafts, horse care, horse training, and riding.” (Camp details are typically announced in spring.)

Weather Watch Performance Horses (Naples)

Andy and Christina Wilson, owners of Weather Watch Performance Horses, teach lessons to children ages 10 and up. (No summer camps.)

What’s available in Bonita Springs for lessons, camps, and pony programs?

Bonita Springs has two kid-focused options—one known for a pony-centered Saturday program and one featuring equine vaulting.

Providence Equestrian Center (Bonita Springs)

Providence Equestrian Center offers Pony Pals, a Saturday program where children groom and tack, ride, learn horsemanship, and enjoy crafts and games. Dana Marino, 11, says, “Riding is good because you get to bond with the horses.” Her mother, Amanda, adds, “It’s great for her confidence… it teaches responsibility.”

In summer, children in grades K–8 can attend themed weekly camps (examples include Christmas in July and carnival). Providence has an air-conditioned building for breaks and a covered arena for riding in the shade. Camp may include a water day, bareback riding, and time with farm animals like chickens, goats, pigs, and cows.

Faith Garcia, 10, a long-time camper, says, “There is a lot of stuff to do here… You learn about tack and the horses’ emotions and how to tell how the horses are feeling.” Owner Heather Cassese adds that hard-working students may have opportunities to volunteer and work for riding credits.

Florida Everglades Equestrian Center (Bonita Springs)

Florida Everglades Equestrian Center highlights equine vaulting—gymnastic-style movement on a horse—as a signature offering. “The equine vaulting sets us apart,” owner Joanna Sime said. Vaulting is available during lessons, camps, and birthday parties.

During summer camp, children ages 6–14 may enjoy lessons, horsemanship, crafts, equestrian games, scavenger hunts, swimming, and vaulting, ending with a horse show where they demonstrate new skills.

Where can kids ride in Lee County (Cape Coral and North Fort Myers)?

Lee County families can find robust lesson programs and camps, including certified instruction and scholarship support.

Saddlewood Horse Club (Cape Coral)

Saddlewood Horse Club offers one of the most extensive programs for kids, with certified instructors teaching both English and western riding. Lessons include riding, grooming, and horsemanship and are listed at $60 per hour. Every other month, Saddlewood hosts Horse Interaction Day—an entry-level way to introduce kids to riding at a lower cost. “It is just a fun day at the farm,” owner Christina Sdrenka said.

Saddlewood also offers birthday parties (with an air-conditioned house), a small petting zoo (bunnies, miniature goats, and mini horses), and summer camps with covered-arena riding, crafts, games, and skill lessons—including equestrian vaulting. Sdrenka says vaulting is “a wonderful way to develop coordination, balance, strength, and creativity while working in harmony with the horse.”

Expect lots of horseback games during camp—egg-and-spoon races, obstacle courses, relay races, and more. “We have a humongous amount of games we play on horseback,” Sdrenka said. “Especially for young kids, it is a fun way to learn.”

Gregory Ranch (North Fort Myers)

Gregory Ranch is a small family-owned ranch offering lessons, homeschool classes, camps, and events. Owner Aslin Gregory also runs Hoofed Heroes, a nonprofit that provides summer camp scholarships. “We try to make it so all kids can go,” she said. “I come from a low-income family so this is very important to me.”

Campers ride in the ring and around the property, interact with chickens and goats, play indoor and outdoor games, make crafts, and swim in a pool. Gregory describes the camp structure: “We do stations: grooming, riding, all things horses, morning chores.” She adds an important reminder for new riders: “They are big majestic beautiful animals, but they are also a lot of hard work.”

The ranch also hosts seasonal events such as Rider Reindeer (a holiday fundraiser) and a fall Trot or Treat event, plus a Trailblazing Teens program focused on community service.

What should I ask before signing up for horseback riding lessons or camp?

Use this quick checklist when you call or email. A few minutes now can prevent surprises later—especially during summer.

Age and skill level: What ages do you accept, and do you group riders by ability?

Safety requirements: Do riders need their own helmet and boots, or are helmets provided?

Heat plan: What’s the schedule for shade, water breaks, and indoor cool-down time?

What’s included: Is grooming/tacking part of the session, or just riding time?

Discipline options: Do you offer English, western, trail riding, or specialty programs like vaulting?

Make-up policies: How do you handle weather cancellations and missed days?

Overnight and day camps are not only an excellent childcare option for working parents, but they also allow kids to find their voice, build resilience, and develop the confidence to fend for themselves.
What’s more, being physically active outdoors can reduce stress and anxiety, support sleep habits, and help maintain a healthy body – and those are just a few of the many physical and mental health benefits.
Whether you have already found a camp that aligns with the interests of your child or are evaluating options, here are some tips to ensure that summer camp adventures are also safe and healthy.

Be prepared

Communicating with the camp staff is essential to making sure children are safe while in someone else’s care.

Be sure to understand the camp’s policies, including:

Protocols for prescription and over-the-counter medications, including inhalers and EpiPens.

Helmet use. Whether riding a scooter or bike, horseback riding, etc., children should always wear a properly fitted helmet. If the camp does not provide them, can you supply a helmet for your child?

Swim safety measures, including lifeguard supervision, required life jackets for non-swimmers, and swimming ability assessments.

Who will deliver health care at camp?

Travel protocols, including vehicle safety and extreme heat precautions.

Food and snack availability and precautions.

Plan to schedule a pre-camp physical, where your child’s pediatrician can review medications, allergies, health conditions, and immunizations. Some camps require pre-camp physicals, and many have health forms that will need to be filled out in advance. Be thorough with these forms, so the camp staff is prepared to meet your child’s health needs, including emotional and social.

Children may also need to be prepared for the camp experience. Feelings of nervousness, anxiety, or homesickness should be acknowledged to validate their feelings. Help them prepare by:

Sharing specific camp activities or visiting the camp before so they can become familiar with the environment.

Making sure they know what to expect, including the daily routine, activities, and rules.

Discussing a communication plan with them, so they know you are accessible.

Letting them choose their camp gear and clothing, as well as activities, so they feel more confident.

Reminding them that camp is all about having fun, making friends, learning new skills, and indulging in interests they may not have time for during the school year.

Swim Safety

Many camps offer swimming activities, making water safety a critical consideration. Parents should discuss the following swim safety measures with their children and camp supervisors:

Never swim alone. Only swim when there is an adult present or a lifeguard on duty.

Parents should inform camp supervisors whether their children are strong swimmers.

Never jump into the water to rescue someone in distress. Instead, call for help and use a flotation device, such as a swim noodle or pole, to reach the person and pull them to safety.

Never dive into water headfirst. This can result in serious injury if the depth is unknown.

Life jackets should be worn while boating or using rafts, inner tubes, or docks. If a child is an inexperienced swimmer, a properly fitted life jacket should be used in the water.

Healthy hand habits

Summer camp is just like school, with children in close contact with each other during the day, playing outdoors, sharing playground equipment and toys, and eating meals together. Just like during the school year, proper hand hygiene can prevent common illnesses like colds, stomach flu, and other contagious diseases. Are hand-washing facilities available, and is hand washing encouraged?
In addition, children should be discouraged from sharing helmets, hats, hair brushes, or pillows. Make sure children understand they should not eat or drink using the same utensils or cup after their friends.

Sun safety

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that all kids, regardless of their skin tone, wear water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher applied every two hours.

Kids should use generous amounts of sunscreen on every exposed body part including arms, legs, face, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and the front and back of the neck. If the camp asks children to apply their own sunscreen, practice with your child ahead of time.

Clothing also offers a layer of protection from the sun. Look for lightweight, tightly woven clothes or items labeled “sun protective.” Encourage children to find shade whenever possible, and make sure they understand the signs of overheating, so they know when to seek help.

Hydration

Good hydration habits start long before summer camp, so be sure your child has developed them. Children have a higher ratio of body surface to area body mass, making them more prone to heat-related illnesses from dehydration, especially during an active, hot summer.

Ask about the camp’s hydration policies. Is the camp staff trained to spot signs of heat-related illness?
Summer camp is more relaxed than the school routine, providing time for free play and screen-free exploration. With a little preparation, summer camp can also be a safe, fun experience.

For parents, the most heart-racing, adrenalin-pumping moments happen when you let go and watch your child try something on his or her own. The moment the training wheels come off, the first trip down the driveway on the skateboard, the time our children ride the school bus – these are more than just memories, these are critical moments that define growth and change. For many families, the first time they send their child to camp is one of the biggest let go, hold your breath, and watch them soar moments in childhood.

In today’s world of high-tech kids and families who have a constant connection to each other, it’s essential to take the time to emotionally prepare for camp. It is, of course, important to prepare the first-time camper, but families need to make sure that Mom, Dad, younger siblings at home – virtually everyone – is ready to adjust to camp life. The American Camp Association® provides the following tips to help ease first-time families into the camp experience:

Parents

As parents, it is important to focus on the positive aspects of camp. Remember that separation is natural, necessary, and inevitable – what better place to have that first experience than in a caring and nurturing environment designed specifically for children? Parents can also focus on the amazing benefits of camp – an experiential education like no other teaching valuable 21st century survival skills like leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and interpersonal communication.

Siblings

Bob Ditter, family therapist and one of the nation’s leading experts on camp, cautions it is likely that the child left at home will experience separation anxiety and truly miss his or her sibling. To help them prepare, be sure to talk about the upcoming separation. Before the eldest child leaves for camp take a picture of your children together that the sibling can keep in their room or carry around. Remind your children about the communication they can have with each other through letters and postcards.

Other Family Members

Be sure that everyone is aware of the upcoming experience. Let family members know how to contact camper if they are interested through letters and care packages — make sure they are aware of any communication policies the camp may have, i.e. no phone calls or restrictions on what can be sent in a care package. In addition, an increasing number of camps are using Web sites to display photos or video during the camp session. According to ACA’s 2011 Emerging Issues Survey, 75 percent of responding camps indicate that they post photos or videos to a Web site for families to view. Forty-five percent indicate that they post information, photos, and videos to social media outlets like Facebook. Families should be sure to ask camp directors about these options.

Camp is an equal opportunity life-changer. By sending a child to camp, families are truly giving a gift that lasts a lifetime. By taking steps to mentally prepare for camp, families not only keep from getting “kid-sick” for their camper, but they can stay positive about the camp experience – which goes a long way toward helping first-time campers adjust to life at camp. And just like taking off the training wheels, the moment families see their camper radiating confidence and joy they will feel that burst of pride and gratitude that they allowed their child this experience.

For more information about preparing for the summer camp experience, parents can visit www.ACAcamps.org. This online resource for families includes expert advice, information on health and safety, and ACA’s searchable database of over 2,400 ACA-Accredited® camps.

For families with children who have special needs, the approaching summer months can prove to be a daunting obstacle to overcome. The need for childcare, as well as educational bridges between the end of one school year and the beginning of the next, in some instances, creates a burden for families with children who have special needs. Finding high-quality summer camp options for children with special needs is a monumental task for many parents in the Naples area. Because of the varying educational, environmental, and physical needs of children, as well as the limited resources to meet these needs within the community during the summer, it can be hard to find a good fit for many families in Southwest Florida.

Special Needs/Inclusion programs are being offered throughout the year for individuals with various disabilities. Programs such as Summer Camp, Spring Break Camp, and Fun Days are for school-age participants. The Social Club and Variety are for adults with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities. There are always inclusion opportunities in the various community recreation facilities as well. For more information visit www.leegov.com/parks/programs/special-needs.

Lighthouse of Collier – Center for Vision and Blindness

This non-profit organization offers a summer camp program for children ages 6-13 who are blind and visually impaired. During each week of the camp, the students take part in at least one outing, providing them with opportunities to integrate within the community and practice independent travel techniques. The two weeks then culminate with a final “closing ceremony” to which family members are all invited, and students can present everything they’ve learned throughout the camp. Visit www.lighthouseofcollier.org/summer-camp for more information.

Naples Performing Arts Center

They offer dance classes for ages 2 and up, private lessons for vocal, instrumental and acting students, and musical theater opportunities for students 6 and up.
Naples Therapeutic Riding Center’s Summer Horsemanship Camp is offered as a weekly inclusion camp during the months of June and July. The camp experience is designed to accommodate children with additional needs and typically developing children.

The Horsemanship Camps are supervised by a PATH Int’l Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor. The camp to counselor ratio is approximately 1:1. Campers range in age from four to sixteen years old and are placed in the most appropriate groups based on their age.
The Inclusive Improve sessions and theatre camps at TNP are for ages 8-12 and another for ages 12+. Designed and taught by professional therapists and teachers, each class is tailored to individuals to ensure proper accommodation, enjoyable classes, and meaningful exercises. This class is designed for students who are on the autism spectrum, have sensory processing disorder, or any other type of neuro-divergency. Students will learn valuable skills like teamwork, patience, sensory awareness, and communication through emotion-oriented, confidence-building theatre games. Visit naplesplayers.org/inclusive-classes for more information.

Summer Programs with Accommodations

Many summer camps make accommodations for children with special needs on a case-by-case basis. For example, at the Greater Naples YMCA, “We do not currently have a camp specifically for children with special needs,” said summer camp coordinator Katie Nelson. “Although we do have children in our traditional day camp who have autism, ADHD, ADD, and other unique needs. My advice to parents is that they reach out to the camp director before they register to see if the camp would be a good fit.” Contact Nelson at 239-571-9023.

The Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples is another such camp. “Since C’mon has a commitment to have access for all, we are open to a case-by-case evaluation,” said Beth Housewert, director of play and learning. ”We do not have specifically designed camps for students with special needs, but have staff who specialize in accessibility and instruction for children with special needs.”
